What is the most popular Sport?

As usual here at "What A Game" we like to clearly define what we mean when we use certain words like "Popular".

  1. First of all to be a popular sport we need to determine:
    • How many people actually play the sport
    • How many countries the sport is played across
    • The number of Professional Leagues across the world
  2. Second, how large is the sport's audience:
    • The number of live events, TV viewers, live streaming Social media Posts, and news headlines.
  3. Other factors may include:
    • Whether or not it is an Olympics sport
    • Is it accessible to the general public
    • Is it seasonal
    • The format, club verses international

Football (Soccer) - Without a doubt Football is a clear leader.

Football is played across 211 countries. FIFA is the governing body and you can find the world rating for every country here

Football has approximately 3.5 Billion viewers. At the last Football world cup the final between France vs Croatia was reported to have 517 Million individual viewers.

Football is very accessible to all, you just need a ball. It is generally a winter sport, however international games seem to be played all year around. Most of the fan base support their local club and when there is an international fixture in progress, like the FIFA world cup all eyes turn to that.

Cricket - comes in second however, a few would disagree with this statement.

As of July 2021, cricket is played across 106 countries. The ICC is the governing body. Currently there are 12 full members and 94 associate members. The major reason a lot of people disagree with cricket's second place is that they only count the 12 full members as cricket playing nations.

Cricket has approximately 2 Billion viewers. It was reported during the final of the 2015 ICC world cup between India vs Pakistan, two very populous countries there was over 1 billion people watching the game.

Cricket is very accessible to all, you just need a bat and a ball. It is generally a summer sport, international teams play at home during this time and travel to other countries when it is not their summer. Most of the fan base support their international team and follow them no matter where they are in the world. With T20 cricket gaining momentum local clubs teams are now very popular with fans. There are 3 types of cricket games T20, ODI and Test cricket. Four if you count Indoor Cricket. Every four years there is a T20 world cup and an ODI world cup.

Basketball - Comes in third.

Basketball is played across 164 countries. FIBA is the governing body and you can find the world rating for every country here.

Basketball has approximately 1.1 Billion viewers.

Basketball is very accessible to all, you just need a hoop and a ball. It is generally played all year around. Most of the fan base support their local club and when there is an international fixture in progress, like the Olympics games viewers support their international team.
